Athlone River Festival – A Vibrant Riverside Celebration of Heritage Culture and Community

Set against the flowing heart of Athlone, the Athlone River Festival invites visitors to experience the town at its most vibrant during the August Bank Holiday weekend. This lively riverside celebration brings together heritage, culture, adventure and community spirit with the River Shannon as its centrepiece.

The festival sees Athlone come alive with bustling market stalls, colourful street performances, and an electric atmosphere that stretches along the riverbanks. Athlone’s Viking past takes centre stage as living history displays return with traditional crafts, engaging demonstrations and fascinating insights into Viking life, customs and storytelling. Visitors can step back in time while enjoying the modern buzz of a thriving town festival.

The Athlone Woollen Mills Market once again lines the riverside showcasing locally made goods, artisan food, unique crafts, and the chance to meet talented makers from across the region. Food aromas, music, and laughter create the perfect setting for relaxed browsing and riverside socialising.

On the water, excitement builds with longboat and kayak battles hosted by Bay Sports bringing energy, spectacle, and plenty of cheering. Viking Tours Ireland offers memorable boat trips on Lough Ree and the River Shannon, giving festivalgoers a unique view of Athlone from the water.

Family fun sits at the heart of the weekend. Athlone Family Resource Centre returns with their much-loved street theatre performance on Friday July 31st, alongside a packed programme of free children’s activities, interactive workshops, and creative play spaces running all weekend. The popular Mad Caps two-day competition adds even more entertainment for younger visitors.

Art, sport and culture blend seamlessly with Luan Gallery installations, Athlone Triathlon Club events, and live outdoor broadcasting from Athlone Community Radio. Proudly delivered by local volunteers, the Athlone River Festival celebrates the river, the people, and the heritage that make Athlone truly special.
