Celebrating Athlone’s Culture, History and Community Spirit!

Market Day & Festival Highlights in Athlone

On Sunday, 17 August 2025, Connaught Gardens in Athlone will come alive for a vibrant Market Day from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM to kick off heritage week. The festivities begin at 11:50 AM with the Athlone Pipe Band parading from the Dean Crowe Theatre. Setting the tone for a day full of music, culture and community spirit.

Visitors can enjoy a short introduction to “Echoes of Old Athlone” alongside a captivating display. Followed by a live performance from the Army Band between 2:00 PM and 3:00 PM. Market stalls, delicious food, live music and family-friendly fun will fill the gardens throughout the afternoon, with a lively traditional session at McNeill’s Corner rounding off the day after the market closes.

The celebrations continue during the week:

  • Wednesday, 20 August – 7:00 PM, Shamrock Lodge Hotel: Information Night & Film Documentary
  • Friday, 22 August & Saturday, 23 August – The Hollow by the Battery Bridge: Over 40’s 5-a-Side Football Tournament
  • Sunday, 24 August – 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM, Culture Day in The Hollow: Enjoy the Over 40’s Football Final at 1:30 PM, followed by the street theatre piece “Broderick’s Women” at 3:00 PM, adapted by Gearoid O’Brien from the novel by John Broderick, performed by Athlone Little Theatre. The day also features live music and stalls at Connaught Gardens and The Hollow.

This series of events promises something for everyone! From music and markets to sport and theatre. Making it the perfect opportunity to experience the rich culture and warm hospitality of Athlone.
