Tradition, skill and community at the heart of Roscommon

The Roscommon Ploughing Championships 2026 promises a vibrant celebration of rural life, heritage and community spirit, taking place on 3rd May. This highly anticipated event brings together competitors, families and visitors for a full day of traditional skills, entertainment and local culture.
At the heart of the championships are the ploughing competitions, featuring conventional tractor ploughing, vintage tractor ploughing and horse ploughing. These contests highlight the precision, expertise and pride of participants while also serving as a qualifying round for the National Ploughing Championships in September. A log digging competition adds further excitement, showcasing another important traditional skill.
Beyond the competitions, the event transforms into a lively family field day with something for everyone. Local businesses will be on hand to showcase their goods and services, giving visitors the chance to support and discover what the region has to offer. Public service groups, including a Garda community stand and the mounted unit, will also be present, offering insight into their work.
Families can enjoy a wide range of activities designed to entertain children and adults alike. A craft village will feature demonstrations such as basket weaving, arts and crafts and blacksmithing, celebrating traditional craftsmanship. Children’s entertainment ensures younger visitors are kept engaged throughout the day.
Live country music and dancing, weather permitting, will create a festive atmosphere, while a vintage display will honour Ireland’s rich cultural heritage. Altogether, the Roscommon Ploughing Championships 2026 is more than just a competition – it is a day of connection, tradition and celebration for the whole community.
