Women’s Fly Fishing Beginner Course at Laois Angling Centre

Women interested in learning the art of fly fishing are invited to take part in two beginner-friendly training days taking place at Laois Angling Centre near Portlaoise on Saturday 25 July 2026 and Saturday 22 August 2026. Designed specifically for women aged 18 and over, these events provide an excellent introduction to one of Ireland’s most rewarding outdoor activities.

Each session begins at 11am with a short indoor introduction before participants move outdoors for four hours of practical casting instruction and hands-on experience. The courses are suitable for complete beginners and novice anglers, with no previous fishing experience required. All equipment will be provided, allowing participants to focus on learning new skills in a relaxed and supportive environment.

The events will be led by Dan O’Neill, an APGAI Qualified Fly-Casting Instructor from Kilkenny, with assistance from Maddy Kelly of County Down. Maddy is a highly respected angler who has earned 25 international caps with the Irish Ladies Fly Fishing Team and has served as team captain on three occasions.

Fly fishing offers much more than the opportunity to catch fish. It encourages participants to spend time in some of Ireland’s most beautiful natural settings, promoting wellbeing through physical activity and connection with nature. The peaceful surroundings of rivers, lakes and streams can help reduce stress and provide a welcome escape from the demands of everyday life. Walking, wading and casting also provide gentle exercise that benefits overall fitness and wellbeing.

The programme aims to encourage more women to become involved in fly fishing by providing a welcoming space to learn, build confidence and meet like-minded people who share an interest in the outdoors. Participants may attend one or both events.

Advance booking is essential. Full joining instructions will be provided to those who register. Women from across Ireland are expected to attend, making the events a fantastic opportunity to learn a new skill while becoming part of a growing community of female anglers.
